d) SIDE PROJECTS
There are two different stories as to how this side-project came about... one is said that it was created through Al's distate of a poor mix of a Revolting Cocks song. Another was through his worry that the final mixes from THE LAND OF RAPE & HONEY would never see the light of day. Whichever story, thus was born that Jim Nash, co-founder of WaxTrax!, confided to him that "a thousand homo DJs would hear it!"
Trent Reznor came about the project through his association with TVT Records, the label he signed to at the time. And the rest is history...
Performers:
Buck Satan (Al Jourgensen, vocals/guitar/bass)
Ike Krull (Mike Scaccia, guitar)
Wee Willie Reefer (Bill Rieflin, drums)
Officer Agro (Jeff Ward, vocals/drums)
Trent Reznor (vocals/guitar, uncredited)
Viva Nova (vocals)
Count Ringworm (Jello Biafra, vocals)
Temple Of Drool Choir (vocals?, 1-2).

Personnel: Recorded and mixed at Chicago Trax. Produced by Luxa/Pan, engineered by Critter and Frisky.
Additional info: The vocals on "Supernaut" were originally Trent Reznor's, but could not be used due to contractual obligations with TVT Records. Al took the vocals and slightly distorted them and told TVT that it was his vocals, which they weren't. The ploy worked, and it was released. Al has never sang the track, except live and also as an exclusive mix on Ministry's GREATEST FITS album. Most compilations and bootlegs were released in later years with the original Trent vocal version, but the differences are quite small.

___________________________________________________________________________
A one-off project, result of a wild night in the studio with Al and co., plus Richard H. Kirk and Stephen Mallinder from Cabaret Voltaire. The single features the song "No Name, No Slogan", with two different mixes. The "original" version was mixed & produced in Chicago by Al, and the other was mixed in Sheffield (UK) by Cabaret Voltaire.
The collaboration came about when Richard and Stephen were in Chicago working with DJ Marshall Jefferson. Marshall knew Al because a lot of the House guys recorded at Chicago Trax, and he introduced them (apparently Al had been a fan of Cabaret Voltaire for a while).
Performers:
Harold Sandoz (Richard H. Kirk, vocals)
Alien Dog Star (Al Jourgensen, guitar/keyboards)
Tennessee King (Stephen Mallinder, vocals)
Biff (Bill Rieflin, drums)

Paul's first band. The Blackouts where formed in 1979, formerly named the Telepaths. According to Bill Rieflin, the Blackouts were formed around the vision of vocalist/guitarist Erich Werner. The band's sound was altered, interestingly enough, when the band's gear was stolen, forcing them to improvise in lieu of being able to afford to replace the gear. Rieflin says this was a pivotal change for the group, and led them to their unique sound. A move from Seattle to Boston found Rieflin and Werner hooking up with bassist Paul Barker and his brother Roland, who played sax and keyboards. In Boston, the band met Al Jourgensen of Ministry, who was invited to produce the Lost Soul's Club EP in 1982. The Blackouts had three releases, though only two featured Paul, so only they will be included.
Performers:
Erich Werner (vocals/guitar)
Mike Davidson (bass, 1980)
Paul Barker (bass, 1981-1982)
Roland Barker (background vocals/synth/sax)

Al's country & western side-project, mainly consisting of cover songs. There is supposedly no set line-up. They have not put out any recorded material, but have played one live benefit show (as "Al Jourgensen & Friends") in Austin, 1994. There is an album planned for future release, though what will be on it (and who playing on it) is unknown.

This is the first solo project by Paul Barker, since Lead Into Gold, after his departure from Ministry. Material for this project, named after his portable studio in L.A., has been recorded, and is to be showcased on the Internet. The first track, a brief 35-second sample of the second section (of three) of "The Perfect Pair", was released exclusively for free download on this site. The track was originally only heard during a DJ event that Barker DJ'd for in late 2006 in Chicago.
The official webpage for this project is located at: www.floweringblight.com
Performers:
Paul Barker (instruments, programming)

This band teamed Al & Paul with Jello Biafra (former singer for the Dead Kennedys) and Jeff Ward, whom had been a tour drummer with Nine Inch Nails. Al and Jello decided in 1983 that they were going to do a music project together, but never did until 1989. It's said that Al had a really good laugh when Jello suggested Lard as the band name.
Sadly, Jeff Ward commited suicide in 1993 due to a long-time addiction with heroin. He was replaced by Bill Rieflin on drums. Bill was then replaced by Rey Washam in 1996, who drummed for Ministry on the FILTH PIG tour. Lard has not recorded any new music in almost ten years, but they have not called it quits.
Performers:
Jello Biafra (vocals/deprogramming)
Al Jourgensen (vocals/guitar/programming)
Paul Barker (bass/programming)
Jeff Ward (background vocals/drums, 1989-1993)
Bill Rieflin (drums, 1990-1996)

All music by Paul Barker, except for "Age of Reason" by Barker/Rieflin and "A Giant on Earth" by Barker/Jourgensen. Engineered by Keith "Fluffy" Auerback and Jeff "Critter" Newell.

Short for Programming The Psychodrill, a phrase cribbed from the 1970 novel The Atrocity Exhibition (chapter, "You and Me and the Continuum"), originally a solo vehicle for Jourgensen. When asked to do a song for the film Robocop, he started work on a track entitled "Show Me Your Spine", when Ogre of Skinny Puppy walked into Chicago Trax. He asked Ogre to sing on the track, and they performed it live in the studio.
Afterwards, the project continued onward as simply another Al/Paul/Connelly collaboration. They released only one single.
Performers:
$corpio (Chris Connelly, big bass drum/vocals)
Alien Dog Star (Al Jourgensen, pan flute/finger cymbals aka guitar/keyboards)

Al and Paul's probably most known side-project, formed around 1985. The original line-up consisted of Al, Luc van Acker and Richard 23 (of Front 242). The band's inspiration comes from Al's love of country-western music. Their name was taken from an all-night drinking session at a bar, when the gang was subsequently thrown out for being disorderly and called "a bunch of revolting cocks".
When Richard 23 left, reportedly over a dispute with the single "You Often Forget", the band became less serious and more lyrically comedic. Chris Connelly and Paul Barker joined in 1987.
Because of their offensive lyrics and raunchy live shows, RevCo have more than once been the target of angry moralists. The song "No Devotion" was put on the PMRC's "banning list", and in 1990, Britain's Home Secretary Douglas Hurd tried to stop the Cocks from performing by refusing them work permits. When it comes to covering other artists, there's been a few problems too.
Their first version of Olivia Newton-John's "(Let's Get) Physical" was rejected by the Australian singer/actor, and Rod Stewart did not like the RevCo remake of "Do You Think I'm Sexy?", although he gave in due to advice from his manager.
Over the years, many artists have contributed to the line-up in some way or another, including hippie-guru Timothy Leary, as well as singers Phil Owen (Skatenigs), N. Ogre (Skinny Puppy), and Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails).
Performers:
Al Jourgensen (guitar/background vocals)
Paul Barker (bass)

The second was of a photo that wasn't quite satisfactory to the group, not to mention Richard 23 and Luc Van Acker are the ones mentioned as members while Al was the producer only. It was cancelled, though some promo copies were released in smaller shops before they were pulled. There were also some pics of the duo on both sides of the record's "face", or middle paper portion. The third was and is the regular cover that most recognize.

(Let's Talk) Physical [6:53]
Personnel: Al Jourgensen, Paul Barker, Luc van Acker, Chris Connelly, Bill Rieflin, Phil Owen. Produced by Hypo Luxa & Hermes Pan. Engineered by Fluffy.
Additional info: Released on June 1, 1990. Two different WaxTrax! vinyls exist: one is a picture disc, the other is standard black vinyl. "(Let's Talk) Physical" is not included on the vinyl format, but is included on the CD (and included but unlisted on the cassette versions). "Get Down" is edited seven minutes shorter for all vinyl versions only -- it is listed as 6:52 on the back of the packaging for the CD/cassette versions, but it is false. Ogre of Skinny Puppy sings lead vocals on "Get Down", but is uncredited. Test pressings of the BEERS, STEERS, + QUEERS LP contained the original cover version of "(You're So) Physical", and was close to being released -- later, pulled due to lawsuit threats from Olivia Newton-John.

In the late 1970's when Al attended the University of Chicago, he met a fellow student named Frankie Nardiello. Frankie had a glam-punk band called Special Affect, formerly the Untouchables, and asked Al to join, even though Frankie thought he looked too much like a hippie. They had released an EP in '79 entitled MOOD MUSIC, though Al did not play on the release. Al joined and became the guitar player. They departed over the next few years, and Al started Ministry in 1981.
Frankie Nardiello later found fame and popularity as Groovie Mann, singer for the group My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. Harry Rushakoff also found his future calling, playing drums for the alt-rock group Concrete Blonde.
Performers:
Frankie Nardiello (vocals)
Alain Jourgensen (guitar)
Marty Sorensen (bass)
Harry Rushakoff (drums)

Acronym for When Everyone Learns the Truth, this was the second collaboration between Al and Ogre, with Michael Balch, in the late '80s. It was talked about more than it was created, since they both were unfortunately getting deeper into hard drugs.
They never released any material, though one song was mixed and performed in the studio haphazardly ("Noreen"). The song somehow made its way on some Skinny Puppy bootlegs, and can be heard in its rawness in that form to this day. In 1995, Al retitled and remixed the track with additional instruments to "The Fall", and included it on the FILTH PIG album.
During the mid-to-late '90s, Ogre wanted to continue the project, sans Al, with Mark Walk, and release an album under the W.E.L.T. name on American Records. Due to poor contractual agreements, the project was shelved for almost five years, and whatever material and rights the duo signed away were property of American. When the rights came back to Ogre to re-record and release material under the name in 1999, Ogre jumped at the chance. When the mixes were completed and Ogre tried to release the material under the W.E.L.T. name, he was denied since another group was already named Welt. So in late 2000/early 2001, the group was re-named ohGr, and released an album entitled WELT in February of 2001.
